Funny teacher. Helpful but tough grader. Knows his stuff. Tells it to you straight and doesn't play games. If you do your work you'll do fine. Slackers gonna struggle.

Pros: At first I didn't like Hackelton, but he made the class interesting and entertaining.
Cons: There is so much work. In 10 weeks he assigned five essays. Also he grades very hard on the essays, and he expects so much. The class is literally based off of how well you do on his essays.

Pros: Can be funny at times.
Really challenges you to think.
No homework assignments (besides essays)
Cons: A FREAKING BUTTLOAD OF WORK.
LOTS OF READING.
okay, soooo hackelton. Where do I start? He is a weird but funny teacher - sometimes he can be quite vulgar/profane if some of you get offended by it. Personally, I thought it was entertaining. Anyways, sometimes he takes attendance, but very rarely. He assigned a crap load of reading! so make sure you stay on top of it. However, you can get away with just reading online summaries like i did because I fell behind the first week since I enrolled after week 1. He gives two out of class essays worth 40 points and two in class essays for 20 points. The out of class essays take A LOT OF WORK! WARNING, THEY ARE A LOT OF WORK! I did procrastinate, but I put in around a solid 20 hours straight worth of work for each of those essays, and I had to get a friend to help me with them. I ended up with a B- , but that easily could have been a B if I received credit for the first quiz and didn't turn in my first essay late. On the final I got a 35/40. I would only recommend him if you are ready for a lot of work. Engineers, don't take this teacher because you probably have other classes you need to focus more on, its too demanding for an english class. Grade Received: B- (barely)

Hackelton is kind of an ass...he is very unapproachable and has a superior attitude. He talks about sex and drugs a bit which isn't to bad, but can get kind of annoying. He can get side tracked about his pot smoking college days, but for the most part knows his stuff. The required readings are interesting and the lecture kind of boring, you will write alot in his class. The essays get graded increasingly harder as they course goes on. Overall, he is kind of rude but if you understand his humor he has his funny moments, hard grader but you will learn in his class if you give an effort.

Hackelton's an interesting guy. A bit crude, but never really too offensive. He does curse pretty often and make off color jokes, which I found hilarious. He makes you think and has lots of unique points of view. His grading is tough though. I'm a pretty good writer and I usually score B+ to solid As, but I never got above a solid B for his class. Still, no regrets. A really fun professor who'll make you think.

Can be annoying. He talks a lot, gets side tracked easily, Gives a lot of reading and essays and mostly does essay discussion in class. Introduces a lot of not important things to the class but is smart and does challenge you. Not that bad.

One of the best teachers I've ever had, and to have him for English was even better. I highly recommend him over any other English teacher so take him when you can even if it is at a bad time.

Pros: Fun class to attend he really makes it interesting and a funny guy
Quizzes are easy even if you dont read the material
Cons: Lots of reading
grades tough on essays
2 in class essays and 2 out of class essays and a final which is revising one of your in class essays with more research. Hilarious guy and tells it like it is. You read 2 books and have quizzes that are on the reading that he goes over the day before. Not an easy A class but it was fun.

Pros: Friendly teacher, the assignments given are interesting, Class time is worthwhile
Cons: Long readings, Pop quizzes if class seems to have not read
Mr. Hackelton is a very knowledgeable professor that makes English 105 enjoyable. The readings that are given sometimes are long , but the reading material is interesting. During the class you have a total of five essays. Three out-of-class and two in-class essays. All the assignments a lot of flexibility and freedom when it comes to what you want to write about. I would highly recommend this instructor.

Pros: Funny, straightforward, uses blackboard.
Cons: weird point scale with decimals and does not round up.
Hackelton is a good English professor because he is funny which means he keeps your attention. Essay requirements are easy to follow. Reading all the books within the timespan of the ten week quarter is tough though. remember to take notes on the texts either in your book or on paper. It will help you a lot when you take reading quizzes and writing your essays. St. Mary's Guide is a text book about writing essays. I never used mine but if you're confused about anything, you'll find an answer quicker rather than looking through the Internet.

Professor Hackelton has got to be the coolest professor I've had at Cal Poly Pomona. He is hilarious! I must have laughed every time I went to class. What I love about his class is that it makes you think. It is infused with a little bit of philosophy. And the thing is, I could totally see myself friends with him, when he was in college. He gives four essays that are somewhat challenging, but as long as you know proper grammar, syntax, and punctuation you'll be fine. He gives a final exam in the form of an essay, but the class has to vote on it. If the class votes to not have a final, no fifth essay! If you want to succeed, I would recommend writing your essays early so you can proofread, proofread, proofread because he finds every mistake, and be prepared to laugh. All in all, I would definitely take Hackelton again. Grade Received: A

This class was really easy for me though i only received a B. The teacher is really funny and always in a good mood. I definetly reccommend Hackelton as he is a really good teacher. Most of the class is about microlending and about helping the poor so the essays are easy. Many tecahers do not accept late work but he does, which is another good thing about taking this proffessor; he will only lower the grade on the assignment a little but other than that the style of the class is laid back. He also lets the class choose on either no final, in-class final, or out-of-class final, so you actually have a choice. Grade Received: B

Hackelton is a jerk, but he knows what he's talking about. Cusses a lot and he puts things in a light you normal don't see. He grades really subjectively, but in the way where if you're a bad writer, then you still have a shot at an A. Lots of papers. He doesn't have a mullet anymore, but he's still a nut. Overall, interesting teacher. I'd recommend him if you don't mind the workload. Grade Received: A

Professor Hackelton is truly a wonderful instructor. If you are used to thinking critically on subjects and decent at writing, taking this professor is a must while you are at Cal Poly. There were a handful of people in my class who were not only poor writers but had poor work ethic, and in the end, they suffered for it. If you take Professor Hackelton, be prepared to do some work, but rest assured, if you are used to doing your work, you will find that the workload is not overwhelming. He makes you do a freewrite before class which is pretty much free points as long as you write a little over a half page or so. There are also a couple quizzes on the reading that he assigns you which is also pretty much free points as long as you read. Then there are the essays which can be a bit more challenging. However, I enjoyed every single essay since they were all on topics that were challenging in a way, but also very fun to write. I feel that my writing skills have definitely improved after taking this class, and would really recommend him. If you think you are an adept student, then not taking Hackelton for ENG104 would be a big mistake, especially if it's because he has a "4" difficulty rating. Grade Received: A-

Likes to talk about random stuff and its pretty funny most of the time. Overall he is a pretty good teacher and knows what he is talking about. If you are a freshmen and you are looking for an A do not take his ENG105 class. He doesn't like freshmen that much and usually wont give you much higher than a B on your papers. My class had 4 or 5 freshmen and none of us could get higher than a B even when our papers were better than some of the upper class students. If you arent a freshmen take this guy you will like it. Grade Received: B+

Good teacher. He's really funny and caught me off guard the first class when he kept swearing. But I really liked the classes, the books he chose were good and he graded really fair. I enjoyed the class alot and would definately recommend him. Just be sure to read and write your essays sometime that isnt the night before and you should be fine. Grade Received: B

He is a cool teacher.Had to write four essays. The last one can be a poem for the final.Reading assigned every day. Not a hard class. Also have to read poems and write about the peom.Have some freewrites in class. You submit your rough drafts to a web cite and your peers evaluate your essay and give you ideas. They also grade your essay so you get an idea what you're going to get on the essay. He interacts with the class during class.

TAKE HIM!!! I SWEAR HE'S ONE OF THE COOLEST ENGLISH PROFESSORS YOU'LL EVER GET. HE'S FUNNY, OPEN-MINDED, AND HE WON'T FRONT WITH YOU. IF HE'S GOT SOMETHING TO SAY, HE'LL SAY IT! Anyways...he's a fair grader though he expects a tad bit for just Freshman English. Don't worry too much, he'll help you out if you need any help. Talk back to him, you'll surely get an interesting comment. Act like a clown, he'll be down with you but as long as you don't go overboard with that. Your there to learn after all, right? I did. It made the class more interesting and fun at the same time. The topics he picks out are cool. Stuff that you already know. Or should know. Those 4 to 5 pages essays minimum were the bitchy part. The length is the problem, but if you know how to bs well, take him!

A pretty cool professor. He seems intimidating in the beginning, but he's a really nice guy. He gives a three easy paper, one research paper, and a final which is a take home assignment. He doesn't care about attendance but suggests you go b/c of freewrites that he assigns in class, but those you can do on your own if a nice classmate tells you what the freewrite topics are (ranges from about half a page to one page the most). Overall his class is pretty easy and if you at least do the work, and maybe read a little you should pass. I only read one of the assigned readings but did all the essays and I received an A.
