Cleaning Up And Organizing Your Room Back Home

By Danielle Wirsansky on April 14, 2020

Going back to your parent’s home or your childhood room can be quite a bummer. When you are back in your parents ’ home, you feel less independent; you have to live by their rules, not your own, while under their roof. Some people have positive nostalgic memories about their childhood room while others do not. You might also be frustrated by the clutter and lack of space. After all, you did live in that room for 18 years before you went off to college. There’s a lot of memories in that room.

A good way to make yourself feel more positive about being back home and back in your childhood room is to clean up and organize your room. It will make the space feel less cluttered, can help you get rid of things you don’t really need anymore, and help you make room for the new things that are important to you in your life. Cleaning your room and organizing it might be stressful. On the other hand, it might help you take control of your own life and make you feel less stressed when you are in that space. Whatever the reason and whatever the inspiration or motive behind your decision to clean and organize your room, you’ve decided to do it. Read on for some tips to help you clean up and organize your room back home!

Step 1: Clear Your Floor

The first and most basic step you can take to clean up and organize your childhood room is to clear your floor. The floor is an easy place to start because it’s flat everything is laid out where you can see it. And it is important to clear so that you have more space to walk and move around in and further organize the rest of the elements of your room. You have to give yourself a space to work in, after all.

You can pick up that dirty laundry, clear off the stacks of objects that have been piling up, or get rid of that rash that’s been piling up around your bed. Whatever is on the floor of your bedroom, get rid of it or find a place.

Step 2: Go Through Your Closet

The next step is to go through your closet. Your closet can become a sort of black hole, a place where you indiscriminately shove things into to clear the rest of your room. It probably has a lot more than you even realize stored inside of it.

Of course, your clothes are hanging in there but there’s usually a lot of other stuff too that may have been forgotten. This is why now is the perfect time to go through and organize and get rid of any clutter that you don’t need anymore. Take inventory of your closet and know what’s in there!

Step 3: Go Through Your Clothes

As you go back and forth to school, you take clothes back and forth with you. Seasons change, trends change, what you like to wear changes, maybe even your body changes too. How do you choose what stays at home and what comes with you? And if it’s staying at home do you really want or need it? Do you even know what clothing is left behind?

This is the perfect time to go through all of your clothing,  know what you have and decide if you like it if you don’t like it, if it fits or doesn’t fit, or if it’s even in good enough shape to keep. Maybe you will even re-discover that really cute top that you haven’t thought about for the last two years because it got stuck in the back of your closet or in the back of a drawer.

Step 4: Make Sure Everything Has A Place

Anything else that is out of place, on the floor, or does not have a place to be, needs to be given a space. This will help you to declutter your room by far. If something does not have a place you need to find it a place. If you don’t have room, then obviously you need to make the room by getting rid of something that you don’t need.

If you have a lot of stuff and don’t feel like you can get rid of any of it, then you need to find better storage options or furniture that can better suit your needs so that you can make sure that everything has a place and does not get in your way.

Your childhood room may be very cluttered and overstuff or it may not be cluttered, to begin with. Whatever the case may be, make the decision that’s best for you so you can be happy in the space that you’re living in. You don’t have to live in the past but neither do you have to get rid of everything from your past. Make yourself a new space that you can be comfortable in.
