When it comes to college housing, you may be facing very limited personal space. Smaller apartments and plenty of roommates are the norm, making it quite uncommon for you to have the space of your dreams. You may have a spacious room, but lack storage….especially when it comes to closet space. An example would be delegating the biggest room to three roommates, which may work in terms of floor space, but you’re still going to have to divide up the existing closet space…which may not be all that much between the three of you. Instead of giving your clothes away or shuttling them off to a storage unit during your lease, consider how you can make better use of your closet space. That’s right, getting more closet space can be fairly easy depending on your certain situation – check out some of our recommendations to see how you can make the most of your closet space.

Restructure closet organization, if possible

If you haven’t moved in already or unpacked your clothes into your closet, this step will be fairly easy. Some closets have an organization system that makes it easy to reorganize, meaning, you can rearrange any racks or shelves to the height or width you would like. Unfortunately, this is hardly the case. Many apartments have the standard one pole to hang clothes, then one shelf on top for any belongings. This basic setup lacks true organization because it doesn’t utilize all your space.

For example, you would use the single pole to hang all your shirts, jackets, and then shove folded clothes on the top shelf, but what about the rest of the space? Blank walls, the closet floor — even the closet door itself! If you can, buying a small closet organizing system that allows you to install and extra rack or two can help you take advantage of the amount of height your closet offers. You can get nearly double the space for hanging clothes than you did before just by adding a second rack to your closet!

Most stores often have hanging organizers for closets or hanging shelves. These usually come with two hooks to add the organizer to your closet, giving you instant shelves (usually around six) so that you can put folded clothes, undergarments, and so on in your closet. You can also take advantage of your closet’s height by adding shelving units, drawers, or even a shoe rack to your closet floor. This makes it easy for you to organize within your closet and keep these units tucked underneath hung clothes.

Think outside of the closet

Your closet space does not have to be limited to the confines of your closet, especially when it comes to shared spaces. Closets can run particularly small, so if you have space outside of your closet that you can take advantage of, you should definitely do so! A simple clothing rack can be a quick fix for getting instant closet space. It makes it easy to hang clothes when your closet lacks space, and many clothing racks come with shelves on top or below the rack for adding storage of shoes, bags, and other accessories. These clothing racks do not have to be in your personal bedroom, but putting one in the living room can also be a great, practical idea.

Just as you would put a shoe rack near your front door so that everyone can store their go-to shoes, you can put a clothing rack in the living room or front door area for all your roommates to hang a few of their favorite jackets and outerwear. This move can be helpful when it comes to bulkier outerwear, which can typically take up too much room in the confined space of your closet.

Adding storage outside of your closet can help greatly when it comes to getting more closet space. Buying just one drawer unit can help get rid of the dilemma of extra clothes, and splitting it between roommates can make it much easier on your wallet.
