Academic Resources

The main reason people go to college is to receive their degree and study a specific industry that they can break into once they graduate. You’ll spend a lot of time in a classroom or doing academic research, so why not take advantage of the academic resources your college has to offer?

Academic Advisors

With so many credits required to graduate, some students can fall behind by taking a class they didn’t actually need or maybe had a difficult semester and couldn’t pass a certain class. Set up a meeting with an academic advisor to make sure that you are staying on track to graduate on time. You don’t want to have to take out more student loans for an extra year because you weren’t aware of some required classes.

Academic advisors will also help you with choosing a major or adding any minors you may be interested in if you started college with an undeclared major. If you find yourself lost about what to study, definitely take advantage of your advisors.

Library Assistance

No matter what major you choose, there is a high chance that you will be required to write a research paper at some point. While research may come easy to some students, others feel lost and overwhelmed with so many different sources out there. Many universities have librarians and research assistants in the library who can help you research and lead you in the right direction for your paper.

Professional Resources

The ultimate goal coming out of college is to land a full-time job. This isn’t the easiest thing, especially if you do not have the experience most companies are looking for in a new employee. Plan ahead and take advantage of the professional resources that your college has to offer.

Networking Events

You’ve heard that networking is one of the best things you can do in the professional world. Many colleges will host networking events with professionals in the industry you’d like to break into. Attend in your best professional outfit ready to make conversation and ask questions about their job. They may help you get an interview or two in the future.

Mock Interviews

It’s common to feel nervous before going in for an interview. However, many colleges offer mock interviews and resume critiquing in their career centers. Take advantage of these services so you know exactly how to behave in an interview and feel comfortable answering questions. These skills will also follow you when you graduate, so you know you’ll ace every interview in the future.

Job and Internship Search Assistance

When searching for an internship or a job, you don’t have to feel alone while scrolling through job postings. Career centers often receive leads on jobs and internships that may not be posted online. They can help you find the right position for you and may even have connections within the company to land you an interview.

Social Activities

While your main focus on college should be studying and building up your skills for the professional world, it’s important to have a social life. There are many social clubs and organizations that your college has to offer that you should take advantage of.

Clubs and Organizations

There are hundreds of clubs and organizations that you can join on your college campus. There is something for everyone to enjoy and if not you can create your own club. This will give you something fun to do while making friends, getting involved in something you’re interested in, and may even give you the opportunity to have a leadership position within the organization.

Fitness Facilities

Being a college student means sitting down at a desk or computer for hours every day. It’s important to get out and be active daily. Many colleges offer fitness facilities and classes for free that you can take advantage of. This will also help in avoiding that dreaded Freshman 15.

Study Abroad

Studying abroad is one of the best things a college student can do. Ask anyone who didn’t and they’ll say that they regret it. Studying abroad allows you to live in another country with the assistance of your college. That means they handle your visas, applications, housing, and you are not completely alone in a foreign place. There will probably never be another time in your life where you can live in another country for months at a time, so make sure to take advantage of this!

What Your College Has to Offer

If you aren’t sure what types of services your college has to offer, simply check out their website or ask around. Your RA is a great resource for this type of information as well as your professors. As a college student, you definitely want to take advantage of all the great services that your college has to offer before you graduate. You’ll thank yourself post-graduation.
