Uloop Morning Scoop: Wildfires, US World Cup Misery, and Protests at Columbia

By Uloop Staff on October 11, 2017

Wednesday. Need we say more? Didn’t think so, but let’s make sure you’re informed by reading the Uloop Morning Scoop for October 11.:

Wildfires consume Northern California

More than a dozen wildfires are running rampant across California’s wine country and have devoured more than 119,000 acres and forced 20,000 people to evacuate their homes as of Tuesday afternoon.

CNN reports, “The fires torched 20,000 acres in about 12 hours on Monday alone. This means the fires advanced at a rate of more than a football field every three seconds.”

At least 15 people have died and 100 are missing from the fires that were fueled by hurricane force winds.

THe U.S will not be at the World Cup

The United States men’s soccer team failed to qualify for the World Cup following a defeat to Trinidad and Tobago last night. It’s the first time our nation will not be at the marquee soccer event since 1986. As ESPN FC reported, “It’s a result that is difficult to process on many levels. But let’s be clear: It’s the most embarrassing defeat in U.S. soccer history and one that will be impossible for this group of players and coaches to live down.”

Protesters disrupt white nationalist speech at Columbia

Here’s the story from the Columbia Daily Spectator:

“More than thirty protesters interrupted a speech by white nationalist Tommy Robinson Tuesday night, holding signs that read ‘hate speech = violence’ and ‘Muslims are welcome here,’ while over 250 other protesters gathered outside of Lerner Hall, with some banging on the doors to the auditorium. Robinson, the co-founder of the English Defence League, an organization that purports to oppose “global Islamification,” has called Islam a fascist and “violent” ideology that incites murder. He last spoke at Columbia in 2016 at an event that garnered little protest.”

And finally, Tom Petty meant a lot to college students, too.

The iconic rocker died suddenly last week, but for Catherine Frederick from Florida State, he was a connection to her dad.

She writes, “Tom Petty’s music was often the background music of my childhood. On long car rides with my family or in peaceful, timeless moments on vacation, there was Tom Petty music drifting out of the speakers as if carried on the breeze.
We always listened to my father’s music when I was younger. It was the same music my mom listened to, too, but my dad was the one who found his perfect sound system and who carefully created playlists and who, for years, had a first generation iPod—the kind with the little wheel—plugged into his car, always ready to play music the moment we’d made it onto the highway.”
